To mark World AIDS Day, 1st December 2010, The Irish Forum for Global Health together with NUI Maynooth and Irish Aid are hosting a two-day conference.
This conference will bring together experts from all sectors involved and working on global health – in particular, issues affecting the developing world. The conference will provide an unusual combination of science, research and hands-on projects being implemented by NGOs. Over 50 abstracts will be presented covering many aspects of health, from HIV to malaria, from eye health to climate change, from nutrition to health service provision.
The John Kevany Memorial Lecture will be delivered by Dr Zeda Rosenberg, CEO of the International Partnership for Microbicides, who will be introduced by Professor Father Michael Kelly. This lecture titled: New Science, New Hope: Giving Women Power over HIV/AIDS, takes place on 29th November at 6pm, Iontas Lecture Theatre, NUI Maynooth
Professor Father Michael Kelly will deliver a lecture titled: HIV and AIDS: Accomplishments and Enduring Challenges. He will be joined by James O’Connor, HIV activist and Development Manager of Open Heart House, Dublin presenting his lecture titled: HIV and AIDS - A Positive Perspective. This lecture takes place on 30 November at 17:00 in the John Hume LectureTheatre 3, North campus, NUI Maynooth. James O'Connor is acutely aware of the human cost of living with HIV and AIDS due to his personal experience of AIDS. He is one of the founding HIV Positive members of Open Heart House. His lecture is followed by the launch of Father Michael Kelly’s new book ‘HIV AND AIDS A Social Justice Perspective in the Foyer John Hume Building, NUI Maynooth. It takes place on 30th November at 17:00 – you are invited to attend.
To commemorate the more than 25 million people who have died of AIDS, and to highlight the theme for this year’s World AIDS Day on December 1st –“Universal Access and Human Rights”. The Dochas HIV and AIDS Working Group in collaboration with the Combat Diseases of Poverty Consortium NUI Maynooth will light up the Iontas Building to highlight the centrality of human rights in the global HIV and AIDS response. The LIGHT FOR RIGHTS Campaign on World AIDS Day is being marked by activists and campaigners throughout the world. It will take place on 30 november at 19:30 at the Ionatas Building, NUI Maynooth.
